Phthalates

Phthalates are plasticizers commonly found in cosmetics and children's toys made of PVC.

These chemicals have been linked to male reproductive system abnormalities and defects.

The European Union recently took steps to ban the manufacturing of toys made with phthalates, and to eventually phase out the use of phthalates all together. (Source)

The FDA recently sent out a warning letter to the cosmetics industry, in response to a citizens petition submitted by the Environmental Working Group

Sweetness

Aspartame (Equal and Nutrasweet) was strong-armed through FDA approval in the 80's.

Aspartame is metabolized by the body to methanol (wood alcohol) and formaldehyde.(Source)

Sucralose (Splenda) is a chlorocarbon, a structure similar to some pesticides. (Source)

Saccharin (Sweet-n-Low) indicates directly on the label, that it causes cancer in lab rats.

Summary

Man-made toxins are chemicals and compounds that are introduced to the environment and our food supply, and ultimately end up in human tissue.
These compounds range from cosmetics ingredients, to petroleum additives, to insecticides, to by-products of industry, to artificial sweeteners and other food additives.

These chemicals are introduced into the market and blessed by the FDA/USDA/EPA for lack of short term deleterious effects on humans.

These chemicals show up in our food and water supply. After many years of debate, beaurocracy and politics, these chemicals may become banned by the government. (Usually after Europe bans them)

By this time, the environment and people have already been saturated with the chemicals, and people are well on the way to a diseased state, and most likely turning to the drug industry for help.

PCBs

Poly-chlorinated Bi-phenyls consist of a group of 209 related compounds that were used in industrial and electrical manufacturing processes, for their insulation and fire-retardant properties.

PCBs are known endocrine disruptors, cause abnormal brain development and have been implicated in several types of cancers. They are known to cause tumors in animal experiments. The EPA states:

"Studies in animals provide conclusive evidence that PCBs cause cancer" (Source)

Despite being "discontinued" in 1979, PCBs are still abundant in the environment. PCBs accumulate in the fatty tissue of animals. The Environmental Working Group states:

"These first-ever tests of farmed salmon from U.S. grocery stores show that farmed salmon are likely the most PCB-contaminated protein source in the U.S. food supply." (Source)

PCBs have also been found in wild salmon. (Source)

Organochlorines

Most insecticides are manufactured using Organochlorines which breakdown into Organophosphates. Organochlorines (as much as 100 million tons/year) are pumped into the environment by the US pulp and paper industry.

Another form of Organochlorines is Dioxin. Dioxins are by-products of industrial manufacturing and waste. They are extremely stable compounds and do not degrade in the environment under normal conditions.

Organophosphates are found in great abundance in the human food chain, especially in produce.
